Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching and to celebrate I am sharing a free pattern. Keep reading for details.

Last year I was really into making items with hearts and I designed a few hats,  headbands, and wrist cuffs for my daughters and her friends. The first heart I designed was my Love Hat. I made this hat because at the time there was such ‘us and them’ mentality surrounding the election. This is also when I learned to make faux fur pompoms (I will need to blog about that soon).

5 hearts

I was so in love with the first heart that I decided to make more. Next was the 5 heart headband. My oldest was in love with it. I thought I had a winner on my hands, when a friend had a genius idea. My friend asked if could add another heart so that I could make her a rainbow headband. Fitting in the heart and getting the size right was tricky, but I was able to make it work and the end result was marvelous.

The 6 heart headband, now known as the Parade of Hearts Headband was such a success that I wrote up the pattern and am offering it for free to my blog readers. As a bonus I am including directions on how to turn it into a heart wrist cuff. My daughter loves to give the wrist cuffs to her friends and they are so quick to make. If you do not crochet have no fear, follow this link to get 10% off your Parade of Hearts order from my Etsy shop (expires at midnight on 2/14/2018).

Now for the moment you’ve been waiting for, the pattern! Also keep your eyes peeled for the Parade of Hearts Hat pattern coming soon.

Parade of Hearts Headband

Notes

  • Yarn: worsted weight, such as, Red Heart with Love and Big Twist
  • Hook: I Hook or what is needed to meet gauge
  • Stitches: Single crochet (sc), back loops only (blo), foundation single crochet (fsc), chain (ch)
  • Color change in fsc tutorial
  • Gauge: 4 stitches and 4 rows (of blo) = 1 inch.
  • Size: One size fits most. Items pictured fits approximately 3 years to adult (model is almost 5). For larger or smaller sizes feel free to adjust hook size as needed to meet your needs.
  • Main color (MC) is the color of your headband (black pictured) and heart color (HC) is the color that you want your heart to be.

For row 1 you will have to change colors during your foundation sc. It is important to note that this is the wrong side of the headband, so be sure to place yarn appropriately. All ends should be pulled towards you, so they will be hidden from the front of the headband (which at the moment is the side NOT facing you).

Alternate Row 1A: This option is for those that cannot change colors in the foundation sc or cannot do a foundation sc. This will not give as clean a closing seam, but still looks sharp.

Ch 15, turn, sc in 2nd chain and each chain across (14sc).

Alternate Row 1B: This will be the wrong side of your work, so make sure to place the yarn appropriately. All ends should be pulled towards you, so they will be hidden from the front of the headband. This row and the rest of the headband is worked in BLO

MC, 4sc, HC, 3sc, MC7sc, (14sc), ch1, turn. Continue onto Row 2

Finishing

Bring 1st and last row together, with right side facing, you will join these rows using sc. Sc through both loops on last row and through blo of the fsc row and each stitch across, finish off and weave in ends.

Alternate Finishing method (for those that chose to start with Alternate Row 1A and 1B)

Bring first and last rows together, with right side facing, you will join these rows using sc. Sc through the chain of the first row and through the blo of the last row and each stitch across, finish off and weave in ends.

When using the graph start at the top of row 1 and work your way down, for row 2 start at the bottom and work your way up

Bonus Wrist Cuff

Use a E, 3.5mm hook.

Row 1: Follow headband instructions and complete 3 hearts, then finish off.

Note: when I make the cuff I change the 14fsc in row 1 to 12fsc, shaving one stitch from the bottom and one stitch from the top. This leaves the heart in the center and makes a slightly shorter cuff for smaller wrists.
