The Handmaid Lovey

Those of you that follow me on Facebook or Instagram are probably familiar with the princess loveys that I make for my younger fans. Well, last week I got the genius idea to make one for the more mature audience.

Clementine aka Offred
Halloween 2017

I have been a fan of the book The Handmaid’s Tale since I was a teenager and, of course, have become a huge fan of the show. In 2017, I dressed my cat Clementine up as Offred for Halloween. Well, I didn’t stop there, last night I finished up my Handmaid Lovey.

As usual, I shared my newest creation in a few of my favorite crochet groups on Facebook. I have gotten such a positive response from everyone that I have decided to hammer out a quick blog explaining how I made it. I used a Bow Tykes pattern for the basic doll and below you will find the pattern for the hat. You can purchase the Bow Tykes pattern here.

Handmaid Hat Pattern
Materials: G hook, white yarn in the same weight as the lovey, yarn needle for sewing onto head, stitch marker for when working in the round)
Stitches (sts): single crochet (sc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch), magic ring (mr), back loop only (blo)
Notes: you will start by working in the round and then move to rows. First you will make the bonnet and then add the ‘wings’ to the top of the bonnet. Fair warning: this pattern has not been tested, so I apologize in advance for any errors.

Bonnet
Round 1: mr, 6sc (6sc), use stitch marker to mark the start of each round
Round 2: 2 sc in each stitch around (12sc)
Round 3: (2sc, sc) around (18sc)
Round 4: (2sc, sc in next 2 sts) around (24sc)
Round 5: (2sc, sc in next 3 sts) around (30sc)
Round 6: (2sc, sc in next 4 sts) around (36sc)
Round 7: sc around, leaving the last 4 stitches unworked, ch1 turn. (32sc) This will be the end of working in the round.
Row 1: sc in each st, leaving the last 4 sts unworked, ch1 turn, (34sc)
Row 2-6: sc in each st across, ch1, turn, (34sc)
Row 7: blo sc in each st across (this is where you will attach the ‘wings’ later), ch1, turn (34sc)
Row 8-9: repeat row 2 (34sc)
Finish off, leaving a long tail to attach the hat to the head. This is the end of the bonnet. You can attach the bonnet to the head at this time or wait until you are done with the wings.

Wings
Make sure bonnet is right side out. The unworked front loops from row 7 will be on the outside of the bonnet and front of the bonnet will be facing you. Attach yarn to first unworked front loop on your right. Needle in the picture above shows where you will be working your first row of wings.
Row 1: sc in each loop across, ch2, turn, (34sc)
Row 2: dc in each sc across, ch1, turn (34dc)
Row 3: sc in each dc across, ch2, turn, (34sc)
Row 4: repeat row 2
Row 5: repeat row 3
Row 6: repeat row 2, finish off and weave in ends.
If you haven’t already attached the hat to your lovey, feel free to do so now.
